Johnny opened his eyes somewhat and tried to find a more comfortable position to lay in. It was late and it was getting dark, but there was no way he going home that night - or any other night for that matter. He had been there earlier that day and found that, not surprisingly, nothing had changed. There had been a few times at the hospital when he'd foolishly hoped that they might have actually started caring when there was a chance they'd loose him for good, whether as a son or a punching bag he really didn't care. If only they'd care about something... But they were cold as always. He had turned around and left the house at the first chance, and then gone straight to the field.
So here he was, trying to get some sleep. But right before he dozed off his eyes flared open and he looked around. He could've sworn he had heard someone or something. The boy sat up, ready to act at whatever had made that noise.

Adriane Spark walked along a sidewalk, having just been allowed to leave the hospital, and had left willingly, her face still decently pale, her blue eyes sad and it was quite clear she thought that everything was wrong with her. Her mother was ashamed of her, her father ignored her because she was female, so she figured she may as well take her time, and take a detour to her house. Walking across a field, she realized she was in the Greaser section of town, and felt a little bit nervous, and she jumped as she heard a sound. The girl cautiously continued walking, until she recognized the boy from the movies.
Her eyes watched this boy, concerned, and she was deep in thought for a moment, before she spoke, "What are you doing laying out here....Johnny?" Adriane looked at him, eyebrows furrowed, and then figured she may as well sit down next to him, to seem less threatening, and figured she didn't need to worry about getting hurt by him, he didn't seem the type.

Johnny relaxed when he saw that the other person was the girl that had been with Dally at the movies. Not that he liked thinking about that evening, what with Dally acting like a jerk, and almost killing himself and Pony. "Hey," he greeted, looking at her as she sat down next to him. It crossed his mind that he didn't feel as nervous about being alone with a girl, a Soc girl even, as he would've expected. But he hesitated some her question, though he tried to hide that. It was ok that the guys knew about his family and all, but to tell a stranger? "Not much," he said and shrugged. "What are you doing here?"

Adriane sat and thought for a moment, and figured she may as well tell him the truth, if it wasn't the whole truth, she didn't mean to lie or anything. He seemed like a nice guy, and perhaps that was why she wasn't afraid of being with a greaser guy. Actually, he hadn't done anything to add to the stuff Dally had that night at the movies, so the girl didn't feel a bit nervous. "Taking a detour. It doesn't matter how long it takes for me to get home. If my mom's in a good mood, and feels guilty about saying bad things to me, she'll just buy me something expensive again." Blue eyes stared at the ground unhappily, wondering why she had told the guy this, but figured it didn't matter, she wasn't in the mood to go home again to hear her father's shame that she was a girl, and that he had no son. That was another reason why it sickened her to go home. There was always....activity in her parents' bedroom when she came home, and it sickened her a lot, to know that her father didn't really want her, and somehow, Adriane also didn't believe that he kept doing that stuff to just have a son, though that was one reason, he was also a total pervert and jerk, so far as Adriane knew.

"Oh..." His eyes widened as he glanced at her. Luckily she was staring at the ground so she couldn't see the surprise on his face. Pony had told him what Cherry had said back when they first met, that "things were rough all over" but he had never really seen or heard anything to prove her statement. Maybe it was true after all. From what Adriane had just said it was. "It sucks when your parents don't care." He hadn't meant to say anything but it slipped out of him. It really sucked.

Adriane watched Johnny for a minute, surprise registered in her eyes and it seemed she wasn't used to having somebody who understood her, at least, not anybody who was on the other side, but hey, she hadn't imagined the guy Soda would be so nice to her. In some ways Adriane liked the greasers more than she liked people like her, rich, indifferent, who acted as though there was nothing that could possibly hurt them. "Yeah, it does. My dad never wanted a daughter, he wanted a son, and he beats my mother occasionally when he's drunk because he's pissed about it." Adriane spoke her words calmly, wondering how it was that she could talk about this sort of thing to Johnny, but she figured he understood her in some way, though she wasn't sure how, it was nice talking to him openly, something she could never do with any of her supposed 'friends'. At least Johnny had real friends, and good ones judging Ponyboy and Soda, they seemed very nice, so he should be pretty happy with that.

Johnny listened to her in silence. Having a father who beats up family-members was something he was all too familiar with. He had noticed her surprise and thought that maybe they were thinking the same thing. "I don't think my parents wanted any kids at all. They sure act like they didn't." Images of the many times his dad used to beat him flashed before his mind's eye and he shivered slightly. His parents probably hadn't even thought about him since his mother came to the hospital, when he had refused to see her, and when he'd been there today they were too busy arguing to realize he was there. He wondered briefly if they were even aware that he was out of the hospital. The dark haired boy looked back at Adriane, his eyebrows raised in wonder. "I thought all Socs had nice families."

Adriane looked down for a moment, too stunned to be able to say anything, but then she looked at Johnny, feeling alarmed when he shivered, but then remembered that she tended to do that when she thought of her sickening father. An eyebrow raised at his later comment, and then she looked down for a moment, wondering how to explain. "It's not that we all have it made. It's just...we're so indifferent. I mean, not we...I don't like being so ignorant to my feelings like most Socs are. But most of them act as if nothing hurts them. Then of course, the families all vary just like yours, but nobody tells anyone else about their parents' bad stuff, because maybe it'll get better or worse." Adriane spoke, deep in thought for a while, and remembered how Johnny had seemed at the hospital, totally afraid, and it was different than talking like this she was sure, and she put her hand on his, looking deep into his eyes and spoke, "Just know Johnny, if they don't want you, I know somebody who would. I bet my dad would be so glad to have a son." Tears flooded her eyes unwillingly, and she turned her head away, struggling to keep from letting it all go, and then she remarked quickly, "See? I'm already starting to try not to show my emotions."
The girl sat there, frozen, wanting to comfort Johnny, though she didn't understand why, and she continued from her earlier comment, "Just think, you're so lucky to have real good friends. Mine really aren't friends. They wanted me to be anorexic, so that I wouldn't attract one of their crushes most likely." Adriane spoke and rolled her eyes, and kept her hand by Johnny's though if he had moved it away, she probably wouldn't have noticed, since she was thinking things through and such.

Johnny looked at her as she told him about typical - or untypical, as the case may be - life of Socs. When she took his hand and looked into his eyes he pulled slightly away, but didn't move his hand. He hadn't expected her to do what she had done. If what they were talking hadn't been so serious he probably would've laughed at her comment about her dad. Just think if her father had adopted him or something! But the smile if i,t was ever there faded, when her eyes teared up and she looked away.
"I guess you're right." How often hadn't the gang told him how important he was to them? And they had never laughed at him or made fun of him when he showed his feelings. Not even Two-Bit or Dally. He gave Adriane a small smile, trying to encourage her.

Adriane smiled and shrugged, it tended to be that Socs. were in trouble one day, and the next written joyfully about in the paper. "So, what are your friends like? I know Soda, and Ponyboy, and Dally, but from what I've heard you have others too. What are they like?" Adriane asked curiously, her blue eyes looking directly at him now, wanting to know a bit more about him, unless he didn't want to tell her anything, which she could understand, but Adriane had discovered that the division of Socs. and Greasers was too crazy, and too broadly thought of.

Johnny thought about that. It's strange how you can know somebody so well and yet when you're asked about them you don't really know what to say. "There's Two-Bit, he's the joker of the group, he can hardly take anything serious but he's a great guy, and Pony's other brother Darry's like everyone's big brother. And Soda's got a friend named Steve. They're both into cars and stuff."

"Oh, they sound pretty cool. You must feel real lucky to have all your friends um...think so highly of you, at least, so far as Ponyboy has told me." Adriane spoke calmly, her smile bright and friendly, looking pretty cool about things, enjoying the darkness to be able to look at the stars that were slowly coming out, her blue eyes watching them in fascination and excitement. Her parents would never let her go out and just see the stars and watch them. They thought it was weird to want to do that.

A bright smile lit up the boy's face. It was true; their friendship meant to world to him, and that showed clearly in his eyes. "Yeah. I dunno where I'd be without them." Noticing the look on Adriane's face he followed her gaze and saw that she was looking up at the sky. She was watching the stars, perhaps. He hid a smile - it was kind of nice knowing there were others out there who did little things like except Pony, Cherry and himself. "Hey, eh..."
